Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs) are green energy credits that utilities, which sell power in Washington DC, can purchase when they are not in compliance with DC environmental laws. An SREC is not the actual solar electricity but instead represents the amount of clean energy generated by the solar system. The homeowner owns the actual solar electricity and sells back any excess solar electricity it generates to their utility supplier. One SREC is created for every 1,000 kw-hours of solar electricity generated — a solar system generates SRECs throughout its operating life.
